The annual sale of pink diamonds produced at the Australian Argyle mine will be held on October 1 in New York. The rare stones have already been displayed in Perth and will be displayed in Hong Kong (September 18 to 28) prior to the New York sale. The Argyle mine, which is owned by Rio Tinto, is the world`s main source of pink diamonds, and the diamonds produced there are renowned for their outstanding color and quality. Sixty-five rare diamonds, which were produced at Argyle during the year, will be offered for sale at the upcoming auction, which will end on October 12. Rio Tinto announced that this year the color of the diamonds is quite unique and the hues include reddish-purple, deep pink, and a rare velvety grey. Argyle produces some 30 million carats annually. Of these, only 8,000 to 10,000 carats are considered pink, and from this number only 65 carats are suitable for public auction. The stones are offered to 100 chosen buyers worldwide who come to Perth, Hong Kong and New York in order to examine them. The location of the display is divulged to potential buyers only at the last minute, with the aim of maintaining a high level of security. Bids for the stones are submitted in sealed envelopes, and the winners` details will not be released to the public. The winners will be informed by the company during the month of October.
